Author Guidelines

Essays should be 4,000 to 8,000 words in length, including footnotes, and saved in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).

Submissions should be formatted following the 17th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style, using footnotes and a bibliography; parenthetical citations of line numbers or page numbers can be used when an author quotes extensively and repeatedly from primary literary texts. Spelling and punctuation should follow (American) CMS standards.

When quoting from the early Robin Hood poems and plays/games, scholars should use the critical edition produced by Thomas H. Ohlgren and and Lister M. Matheson: Early Rymes of Robyn Hood: An Edition of the Texts, ca. 1425 to ca. 1600. Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies 428. Tempe: Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, 2013.

Quotations from Old English, Latin, Old French, and Anglo-Norman sources should be translated into modern English (using American spelling standards, where applicable), and the translation enclosed in brackets immediately following the original. Poetry quotations more than six lines should be formatted as block quotations, indented 1 inch from the left margin, double-spaced and unjustified. Prose quotations more than six lines in the manuscript should be block quotations.

To ensure blind review, authors should omit their names from their submissions, both text and files.

An author who wants to submit an manuscript for review must first establish an account on the website. Once that has been done, the author can then submit his or her manuscript via the webiste's Submissions link.
