Through Robert Pogue Harrison’s <em>Dominion of the Dead</em>, and Tolstoy’s <em>The Death of Ivan Ilyich</em>, this essay examines the death of others, and how the experience of another’s death informs the life of the living. The death of others is the possibility of a shift in the world of the living; this possibility for the living arises primarily through relationship with the corpse.</p> ER -
